Kings and Queens

Near liked history. He liked reading about the greatness of a kingdom. Great wars that took lives of hundred thousands of people. A civilization that grew into great nations. The grace of a king, or emperor amazed him. Ruling a land of their own with their rules, where they can do anything. And yet they don’t have to listen to what others think, because they’re the leader and their words are final.

Even though it sounds a bit unfair, but that’s what Near wanted. A life where he could live by his own rules, without having to follow other’s life. He wanted to be his own person, not striving to be a single letter. But he’s unsure if he’s capable to do that.

He dreamed of ruling a world of his own, where people will play by his rules. He always hoped he could ignore the crude remarks others gave. He hoped he could have the same confidence as the great kings in history books. But he couldn’t. For some reason, he’d hide away from others to avoid them.

He liked to act out his fantasy with his toys. He’ll be King Near, the great king known by people all over the world. The great justice, the one with the upper hand. The king who is known for his good heart and bravery. And everyone loves him.

King Near is loved and praised by many, but Near is shun away by others. He wished he could fit in, be normal. Just once, is it that hard to ask? But foremost, he wished his ‘rival’ would stop hating him.

He admired the other boy. His confidence, his bravery. The way he strutted into the room with pure confidence showing on his face. His blond hair shined under the sun, shining like the crown kings wear. Everyone was terrified of him, but secretly they also admired him. His passion in working hard to be number one is truly deserves praise. But the boy would never accept a compliment from him.

He often imagined Mello as his queen. Maybe it’s because Mello was beautiful in his eyes. Almost as pretty as his mother. But he never told anyone, in fear that the fact would reach Mello’s ear and he’d get mad.

Every time Mello came to his room, either to yell at him or threaten him, he often imagined another scene playing before him in his mind. Where Mello would come to his quarters, telling him his enemies were at the outskirts of town, preparing to invade. And he’d order his soldiers to defend the castle, while joining the battle when he feels it’s necessary. Mello would give him advice in war strategies. And they would celebrate together after their enemies are perished.

But he’s not King Near and Mello’s not Queen Mello. They’re just Near and Mello, number one and number two in line for the great detective L’s successor. They’re just a couple of children groomed to take over when the great L failed. Like princes who takes over the throne after the death of their fathers, the kings.

Maybe if he become L, he could do it with Mello. Working together, side by side. With him doing the thinking and Mello taking actions. It’s not exactly like the kings and queens, but it’s close. Then maybe they’d let themselves free from this childish rivalry. And maybe Mello would let go of his hatred that’s completely made up.

And perhaps, they could be friends. After all it’s just a dream, a childish one. In where they could be anything they want, do anything they want. Including being kings and queens of Wammy’s House and ruling with their own rules.

But in the end, it’s all just a dream. A dream so far out of reach it’ll never come true.
