Title: Illogical
Summary: It's not his fault for thinking it's a complete failure. He blames everyone for it.

Illogical

Zach always believed falling in love with your best friend is the worst kind of love. It gets awkward, crossing the line between platonic and romantic. You can’t distinguish between love, and love. And when something goes wrong, not only the relationship was broken, but the friendship was in ruins too.

He remembered his parents, friends since they were young. They believed they were falling in love, and got married at eighteen. Though they had their ups and downs, they stick with each other. But one day, one fucking day they decided to split up. Why? His father met someone else, albeit older, but they had a lot in common, more than him and his wife slash best friend. After the affair was known, they kept their distance, not saying a word to each other, and one day he disappeared without leaving a note. And from that day on, his mother despised him.

From that day on he thinks love is stupid. Lovers are weak, giving into temptation of temporary pleasures and sweet lies. Love is manipulative, dangerous. He made a mental note not to easily fall into the seductive looks girls with pretty smiles gave him. But there’s more to that; he swore he would never fall in love with his best friend, whoever they are.

But now he felt like pulling his hair out, as he paced across the room struggling not to think of a way to kill Nate for gaining attention from his best friend, Victoria. Of course he did a fine job of acting like a supportive friend when she told him about her new found object of affection, but on the inside he felt his heart shattering to pieces. And he found out he loved her, in a romantic way, the same day.

It couldn’t be just being afraid of your best friend leaving you for another friend, if that were the case he’d kill every male who tried to befriend Victoria. And hell, she had loads of friends from the opposite sex. No, he was jealous. And he blamed himself for being stupid about it.

A knock on the door woke him up from his thoughts. He unlatched the front door and Victoria, smiling happily like she never did in years, entered.

“Zach my man! Guess what?” she said as she slung her arms around him.

He raised an eyebrow, gesturing her to continue.

“Nate; I told him how I felt and he said he likes me too!”

He made a mental note of the usage ‘like’ instead of ‘love’.

“How’d you tell him?”

She paused, trying to remember what she said hours ago. And she looked so adorable doing so, damn his hormones for doing this to him!

“You know I like to go to his room sometimes, right?”

He nodded, eyes focused on her expression.
“So he was busy staging this set, with dinosaurs and stuff. I grabbed the T-Rex and said ‘rawr!’ in front of him. He didn’t actually smile, but the corners of his lips twitched a bit so I pulled him and told him I like it better when he smiled. And he kinda gets speechless or something like that, so I told him I liked him.”

She said while a tinge of rose blushing her cheeks.

“And he said he likes me too! So we’re kinda going out right now. But we’re taking it slowly.”

He nodded in understanding.

“Well congratulations then. When’s the first date?” he asked, trying to at least be polite about it.

“Dunno. I’m a bit busy, and so is he. Oh, speaking of which I gotta go. Bye Zach!” she said in a rushed tone before giving him a peck on the cheeks and heading to the door right away.

She didn’t even tell him where she’s going.

He shuffled his feet to the couch, and lay uncomfortably. Closing his eyes as he listened to the fire cackling.

He hates this. From all people does it have to be her? Can’t he just go crazy about some girl he sees on TV?

He knew that she likes boys like Nate. Hard to read, simply mysterious. Slightly antisocial, but it didn’t really matter to her. A calm demeanor, something he usually failed to manage. And Nate was a natural born genius so that adds up another point.

But in contrast to him, Victoria was very emotional. She gets very sensitive about things, and loathes people who are better than her. She acts brashly, her emotions fueling her actions. Her ambition was to beat out her competitors. The only thing she had in common with Nate was they were both geniuses. Although she’s not as smart as he is, her charm could practically get her anything.

They were like perfect pieces to a puzzle, polar opposites that managed to attract, and he envied them. While Nate was quieter, she was rather loud. Nate obviously fails at social skills, but Victoria had that charm and looks – oh those devilish look – that could get her anywhere.

He wonders what their children would be like. A perfect, human being. Flawless.

And what does she left him? Nothing. He was sure right now he took a backseat in her list of priorities.

He hates Nate. He hates Victoria. He cursed his damn hormones. He hates his father, leaving his family for another woman. Leaving his best friend for a woman he had more in common with. He hates his mother, for telling him not to fall in love with someone he’s close to.

But more so, he hates himself.

Because he knew, even though how much he wants her to be his, they would never work out. One day, they would find someone else they find more interesting, and leave. Because he always knew best friends falling in love and being together happily ever after are just in movies, not in real life. Because he always thought those movies were illogical, making the characters seemingly unreal.

And because he knows the line between ‘best friends’ and ‘lovers’, and for him and Victoria it was drawn with a red marker.

And now he felt she was so out of reach. The mere thoughts of her liking him only a slight bit making him cringe. She was untouchable now, like a distant memory.

Perhaps he should avoid her. Maybe it’ll help him heal his aching heart.

AN: Nate is Near's real name. Just using it when I crossposted to LJ.
