Six Feet under the Stars

Time to lay claim to the evidence
Fingerprints sold me out
But our footprints washed away
From the docks downtown
It’s been getting late for days
And I think myself deserving of a little time off

I stood up and sighed. Guess hanging out with Dirk wasn’t all that fun after all.

The arcade was now filled with people looking for fun on the weekends. Dirk and Lilith decided to have a racing match, while Johnny, Ripp, and Ophelia played pinball. Me? I just stared at my best friend, who was looking around, obviously bored.

Boredom clear in her eyes, she slumped and walked towards the soda vent. I followed her, my throat begged for a drink. Our eyes met, and I can’t help but stare at her warm brown eyes that seemed to light up when I saw her.

“Boring isn’t it?” she said with a yawn. I nodded as I took a sip of my root beer. “I’d almost die from it if I you didn’t come along” she joked. I smiled and pretended to choke and die. She laughed at me and hit me softly on the back.

Tara DeBateau. My best friend and obviously the person I’d look forward to spend time with. Forever, if I could. Until now I just never build up enough courage to tell her how I feel. Not that it’s important; I know she wouldn’t feel the same way.

“Hey, how about we ditch them and head back to my apartment?” I asked hopefully. “Sure, but won’t your parents mind?” That is another problem. My parents, or should I say my mom isn’t very keen on having her around. Mom says Tara distracts me from my studies, even though she tutors me.

“They won’t mind” I said. “They’re out of town anyway. Be back next week.” Her mouth formed a small ‘O’ and nodded. We both left without saying goodbye to the couple, or threesome.

We walked in silence. My hand was in my pocket, trying to keep myself warm. Tara wrapped her scarf tighter around her neck. Her cheeks were red from the coldness. The night was surprisingly cold, even though it was summer.

Beside me, Tara shivered. So being me, I wrapped my arms around her waist as we kept walking.
Finally we arrived at the place I call “home”. I quickly opened the door and let ourselves in. She sat on the couch as she turned on the TV. I hurried to the kitchen and prepared two glasses of hot chocolate. I gave one to her as I sipped mine; my eyes never took off of her face, still blushing red from the cold or her eyes that gave me a warm feeling inside.

“What?” she suddenly asked. My focus shifted away from her eyes and to her. “Nothing. You must be really cold, your cheeks are red.” I replied. She raised her eyebrow and continued watching TV, oblivious to the heat I felt on my cheeks.

In the cold, you look so fierce
But I’m warming up
Because the tension’s like a fire

Time sure flies when you’re having fun. The next thing I knew, I was asleep. My head rested on the armrest while Tara leaned to my shoulder. I could tell it was noon. Yeah, we sleep in.

I didn’t want to wake her up, so I lay there trying to regain full consciousness. I ran my hand through her fiery red hair. I watched her fell asleep a few times when we went camping together three years ago. But still, I still love it when she’s sleeping. She looks peaceful and happy. Unless when she had a nightmare, she winced and mutter under her breath.

Slowly, she woke up. Her eyes fluttered heavily as it dawned to her that she had fallen asleep. “Mind if I take a shower?” she asked groggily. And without waiting for answer, she walked to the bathroom. That’s Tara for you; always taking things without consideration.

I went to my room and grabbed some of my shorts and t-shirts. Then knocked on the bathroom door and gave the fresh clothes to her.

She finished pretty fast. Then got out and dressed. It was my turn to take a shower while Tara went to the kitchen to grab make some lunch.

After we sat down and ate, I finished off my eggrolls and looked at her. “Wanna go to the beach?” I asked. She nodded and continued eating.

She rang her dad first. Mr. DeBateau was a nice man, who really cared for his daughter. He doesn’t mind me spending time with Tara, unlike mom.

Moments later we were out to the beach. With a basket on our hand, we’re having a picnic.

Considering that I rarely had dates, this would be what some would call a date. But I’m going with my best friend and we did this often when we were kids, so no harm in it right?

Praying silently that this day would be great, it turned out quite unexpected.

Even though it was sunny and hot, suddenly rain poured down, pouncing on us as we ran to find a shelter. Great, my day is ruined and I’m soaked. And we just had to get the food wet too, didn’t we?
But what I didn’t understand is why Tara acts like everything’s perfectly fine. I mean, she’s wet, her hair’s soaked, and her shoes drenched with water. I thought she’d say goodbye and left for home, but she’s still staying.

“Don’t hate the rain for this Justin.” She piped up as she gave me a knowing grin. I frowned and crossed my arm. I mean, come on! Because of the rain I had to sacrifice this lovely picnic! How can I not hate the rain?

“I still like it here though.” She said as she stretched out her arm and yawned. “I had a great sleep last night, who knew you’re really comfy to use as a pillow?”

I grinned in amusement. “Well I am cuddly. What do you expect?” she hit my arm playfully as she looked up.

The sky just turned into a fierce orangey red. Just like her hair. I watched in amazement as the sky reddens to the setting sun.

“Night’s falling.” She said softly. “Yeah…” I replied. And I saw the moon, slowly making an appearance and so are the stars which started to shine.

The rain had stopped. We both went out and gathered the rest of the food, throwing it carelessly into the basket. Then we laid on the sand on our backs, staring deeply into the sky.

“Tara?” I asked. I can’t help it, it was bugging me! Why does she act so calm about this? I thought she’s having a rampage now. “Mhm?” she replied, her eyes still staring at the sky.

“Are you mad because I ruined your day?” I saw her look at me in disbelief from the corner of my eye. “No. Instead it was the best day ever.”

My heart skipped. Did she just say it was the best day ever? I must be dreaming.

“R-really?” I looked at her surprised. “Of course it was. Spending time with you is great. It always was.”

I smiled and held her hand. As we continued watching the stars, I can’t help but notice that the shine was like the ones from her eyes. And now here we are, just the two of us, six feet under the stars…

But there’s room for two
Six feet under the stars
